Pada tahun 1896 terdapat 12 perusahaan yang terdaftar di DJIA. Jumlah keanggotaan indeks kemudian diperbanyak menjadi 20 pada tahun 1916, dan akhirnya menjadi 30 perusahaan sejak tahun 1928 hingga sekarang.
Editor akhbar The Wall Street Journal memilih perusahaan mana yang akan dikeluarkan dan dimasukkan ke dalam indeks.
