THE ringgit closed lower against the US dollar yesterday amid concerns over the global economic outlook, dealers said.At 5pm, the local unit weakened against the greenback at 3.5620/5670 compared with Wednesday's closing of 3.5610/5650.Dealers said investor sentiment soured after leaders from the Group of Eight nations warned that the world economy still faced significant risks.
"Renewed concerns about the global economy prompted investors to buy the dollar,which is seen as a safe haven during times of market turmoil," a dealer said.In late trading yesterday, the ringgit also traded lower against other major currencies.
Against the Singapore dollar, it was lower at 2.4424/4472 from 2.4391/4442 Wednesday and weakened against the yen to 3.8170/8244 from 3.7830/7877 previously. Against the euro, it was easier at 4.9711/9792 from 4.9522/9602 Wednesday and lower against the British pound at 5.7537/7630 from 5.7341/7416 previously.
