Tenaga to resume works on transmission cables upgrade

SHAH ALAM: TENAGA NASIONAL BHD [] (TNB) is expected to resume CONSTRUCTION [] works on the Central Area Reinforcement (CAR) project in Kampung Sg Terentang, Rawang on Wednesday, March 17, to upgrade power transmission to the Klang Valley.

In a statement issued on Monday, TNB said the CAR project, which was to upgrade the 33KV transmission supply cables with high voltage cables, was in compliance with Section 13 of Act 447 under the Electricity Supply Act 1990.

The project was delayed for about three years, pending the outcome of a court decision, after residents in Kampung Sg Terentang had opposed the construction of transmission towers near their neighbourhood.

"On Nov 20, 2009, the Federal Court ruled in favour of TNB adding that the CAR project can continue under Section 13 of the Electricity Supply Act 1990," said Tenaga in the statement.

The court also directed Tenaga to pay compensation to the residents amounting to RM10.4 million, as decided by the Selangor state government.

Once completed, the project which involves laying of high tension cables over a 59km stretch, about one kilometre away from Kampung Sg Terentang, would involve the building of five monopole towers.

The CAR project would increase the output of electricity from 33kV to 275kV and help overcome power shortage in the Klang Valley, especially the infamous power outage on Jan 13, 2005 which involved the southern regions of the country.

Completing the project early will be vital to maintain a continuous supply of electricity to the Klang Valley and other related regions, said the statement. — Bernama
