EU, Asian policymakers meet in KL

KEY policymakers from Europe and Asia started meeting in Kuala Lumpur yesterday to discuss Asia's strategies and potential growth amid a challenging global environment.

In a joint statement, Bank Negara Malaysia, the European Commission and Asian Development Bank said they will launch the two-day Asia-Europe Meeting (Asem) and conference themed "Beyond the Global Crisis: A New Asian Growth Model?" today.

Raja Muda of Perak Raja Dr Nazrin Shah will deliver the keynote address today, while a special address will be made by Prime MinisterDatuk Seri Najib Razak tomorrow.

Participants in the conference comprise officials from finance and economic ministries and central banks from 43 Asem countries.

The welcoming remarks will be delivered by Vincent Piket, Ambassador and Head of Delegation of the European Commission to Malaysia; Dr. Jong-Wha Lee, chief economist and head of the Office of Regional Economic Integration from Asian Development Bank; and Bank Negara Governor Tan Sri Dr Zeti Akhtar Aziz.

Asem was established in 1996 as an inter-regional forum for dialogue and cooperation, bringing together the 27 European Union member states, the European Commission, the 16 Asian countries and the Asean Secretariat.
