GEORGE TOWN: DiGi Telecommunications Sdn Bhd (DiGi) is hoping to expand its Turbo 3G population coverage to the entire Penang island way ahead of its target of doing so over the next three years with a commitment of RM75 million.

DiGi head of products and segment marketing Albern Murty said DiGi population coverage which stood at 31% on the island in May was now 70% and will cover the entire island soon.

Speaking at the launch of its 3G voice and data service in Penang, which was carried out simultaneously with Sabah, ahead of the Klang Valley launch which is expected to be carried out by the end of the year, Albern said Penang was a main market for DiGi.

Present to launch the event was Penang Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng.

"Penang is a key player and a huge business for DiGi, hence our decision to launch the Turbo 3G service here ahead of even the Klang Valley as there has been a great demand for our service here.

"Today, 200,000 of our subscribers with 3G devices both in Penang and Sabah would immediately have access to our service while new subscribers in these market centres will automatically enjoy DiGi's Turbo 3G on their mobile phones upon activation.

"The launch marks a key milestone for DiGi as we are now able to offer complete internet solutions to customers both on big and small screens," he added.

He said DiGi's strategy to launch Turbo 3G on PCs and and laptops allowed it to address the gaps in the market and to manage its network better.

"We aim to emulate key learnings and apply it for 3G on mobile phones," he said.

Riding on Malaysia's newest Turbo 3G (14.4Mbps HSPA) network, as well as stable internet connections on the widest EDGE network outside its Turbo 3G coverage area, DiGi promises Penangites a consistent internet access on the go.

He said DiGi customers can expect a seamless transition between Turbo 3G and EDGE and a hassle-free activation process which does not require changing their SIM card or requesting any further settings.

In conjunction with the launch of its Turbo 3G service for mobile phones in Penang, DiGi is offering new plans for customers to enjoy the Internet namely the internet unlimited max 5 — a new tariff for all DiGi prepaid subscribers with unlimited internet all day for no more than RM5 day and internet unlimited monthly 58, a unlimited high internet access plan now offered until Dec 31 at RM48 for the first 12 months (normal price RM58).
