Malaysia March leading indicator up 0.5pc

MALAYSIA'S six-month smoothed leading index, a forward looking measure of economic activity, rose 0.5 per cent in March, the Department of Statistics said today. In February, the six-month smoothed index fell 0.7 per cent. “The six-month smoothed growth rate of leading index (LI) has gradually improved since January 2009.

If the growth momentum of LI persists, the economic slowdown is expected to turn around in the third quarter of 2009,” said the department. The smoothed index removes one-off statistical events in its calculation and is the only forward looking economic indicator released by Malaysia. -- Reuters
